Fortifying existing systems in line with The Government Climate Action Plan 2019
About the project
The Beaumont Electrical Infrastructure Upgrade succeeded in fortifying Beaumont Hospital’s Medium Voltage (MV) electrical infrastructure to make it more consistent and dependable in line with The Government Climate Action Plan 2019. As the hospital ramps up its expansion plans, this put more pressure on the existing infrastructure, for which IN2 surveyed the current state of the Hospital's MV infrastructure, ensured the proposals for the MV infrastructure were aligned with the national energy consumption benchmarks, and provided a roadmap for future developments.
The report aims to provide an essential guide for Beaumont Hospital by detailing the immediate, short to-medium and long-term strategic and operational planning for the Beaumont Hospital thermal distribution network.
Key figures:
- 110kV grid connection & bespoke 110kW substation negotiated with ESB
- 15MW Thermal
- 8MW heat pump
- 8MW electrical
IN2 was appointed as part of Beaumont’s Electrical Resilience Project to, first, establish the current MV infrastructure Hospital’s Heat generating plant and distribution infrastructure. This included identifying general condition and life expectancy of plant and equipment. IN2 also conducted a review of Non-Conformance and Necessary Works, complete with a ‘Grading Study’ and a rating of the heat pump.
IN2 also developed an Outline Design Stage Report on the current Thermal installations and supporting infrastructure with commentary of conformance to current standards. This report also included a list of deliverables that spanned outline delivery programmes, MV infrastructure drawings, a set of outline sketch plan drawings for the proposed Energy Centre arrangements an Order of Magnitude Costs (OMC), and prospective electrical loadings from Pathfinder design teams, amongst others.
Another key part of IN2’s contribution was futureproofing and ensuring Beaumont’s resilience in potential scenarios. IN2 provided a roadmap for Beaumont Hospital that addresses the current compliance shortfalls but also immediate and future developments. These were made in line with the planned hospital developments which planned for new clinical facilities such as a Cystic Fibrosis Unit, Radiology Diagnostic Departments, and a new Emergency Department.
By delivering electrical resilience through the procurement of new electrical infrastructure to support their development plan and at the same time, Beaumont Hospital will reduce carbon emissions in line with the Irish Government targets through the implementation of fossil free technologies.
