About William O'Donnell - Director - Building Physics at IN2 Engineering

William heads up the Building Physics, Planning Services, and Sustainability department of IN2 Engineering overseeing building simulation across the group

Since joining IN2 in 2007 as a Mechanical Engineer, William has shown strong aptitude for building simulation and sustainability. William has dedicated his professional career to driving the use of dynamic simulation and CFD in Mechanical Engineering design. Chartered with Engineers Ireland since 2011, his extensive experience in concept design of natural ventilation strategies coupled with his experience in CFD has resulted in numerous award-winning projects at IN2 Engineering.

Key components in William’s purview are IN2’s pre-planning deliverables, where he is proven himself as one of Irelands foremost Daylight and Sunlight consultants. This planning stage department provides Daylight and Sunlight, Wind and Micro-climate, Pre-Planning TM59 assessment and M&E planning design working closely with all of Irelands leading Architectural firms.

William has a significant expertise in Sustainability assessments having been both a BREEAM assessor and a LEED AP

William has sat on the consultant workshop group for the Home Performance Index (HPI) providing technical guidance and industry insights into various credit requirements for the revised standard. William has the privilege of sitting on the Board of Directors of the Irish Green Building Council.

In keeping with Ireland’s 2030/2050 targets, William and his team work with major stakeholders on the Island of Ireland to provide realistic pathways for public bodies to meet their obligations. These decarbonisation frameworks will determine how Ireland can achieve significant savings in our greenhouse gas emissions for the future.

William manages a growing team of highly skilled individuals who are experts in implementing decarbonisation and sustainability strategies, ensuring that integrated passive design measures are inherent into the design philosophy of each building.

The team prides itself in its ability to recognise talent and continually striving to develop the next generation. The majority of his team have started as Interns on college placement and returned to IN2 after their final exams. This dedication to teaching, and conversely learning from these young minds, has ensured a dynamic approach to how the team approaches simulation and its acceptance of new ideas and concepts.

William has worked on hundreds of projects in both the public and private sectors and seeks out innovative solutions for clients, continually striving to exceed industry standards.
