  • Introducing state-of-the-art healthcare technology into a live hospital environment with minimal disruption

    About the project

This complex project involved converting a mammography suite in the Beaumont Radiology Department Block to a state-of-the-art single Computer Tomography Suite (CT Room).  IN2 were assigned to provide full M&E and deep retrofit services.

The aspiration for the delivery of this new CT Scanning room at Beaumont Hospital was to set the standard for delivering imaging suites in a live Radiology Department using innovative site access arrangements. As well as ensuring safe and effective patient health care, the project complies with all relevant HTMs and HBNs, demonstrates efficiency in energy consumption, and creates an improved environment for critically ill patients and staff.

The location of the proposed CT Room, which is situated in the middle of the Radiology unit, presented numerous challenges, the main being the question of how to bring the bulky equipment into the room without disrupting the rest of the department. It was also assumed that it would be near impossible to demolish and remove waste materials from site through the live Radiology department.

It was decided that an innovative site access arrangement at roof level with accompanying temporary staircases would be utilised to bring in the equipment in directly from outside. This would cause minimal disruption and ensure that the equipment - which included the CT scanner, recovery beds, and controlled units - made it to its destination without undergoing any damage. Such an innovative solution was only possible due to IN2's in-depth knowledge of the Radiology Department CT Scanning project from the concept planning, through the design and construction to handover and beyond, and well into the post-occupancy phase.

Another challenge was the time scale of the project from kick-off to completion which amounted to just 6 months. IN2 utilised the teams' expertise in construction and project management to design and install modular plant rooms, thus keeping the construction programme on schedule. This meant that the Radiology department could still operate whilst construction was ongoing, preventing any delays in medical examinations and maintaining the live hospital site's operability.
