About the project
IN2 was appointed Lead Consultant for the delivery of the Laboratory refurbishment and Kitchen upgrade at Athlone Institute of Technology. The project was carried out in 3 phases.
Running parallel to this project, IN2 was also providing M&E expertise for the Athlone Campus TUS Science Laboratory / Business School Refurbishment, which involved phased works to minimise disruption. The project programme was compressed to enable all works to take place during the summer break.
Other challenges that IN2 encountered while working on the project was to ensure that we were familiar with the Institute's standards and procedures. IN2 ensured that approval requests and notifications of Interruption to Services were provided well in advance
Phase 1
Phase 1 consisted of 500m2 refurbishment of the existing engineering laboratories and computer rooms & conversion to 2no. science laboratories with associated preparation and support rooms.
Phase 2
Phase 2 consisted of 1,000m2 refurbishment of the existing science laboratories and administration areas & conversion to 7no. new Laboratories. IN2 was responsible for the mechanical and electrical services design, including the provision of heat recovery ventilation systems to provide mechanical ventilation of deep plan teaching spaces. In addition to the mechanical heat recovery ventilation, a specialised darkroom ventilation system was installed to ensure energy efficient internal comfort was achieved.
Phase 3
Phase 3 consisted of the refurbishment and extension of the existing restaurant and kitchen. IN2 initially carried out a detailed survey of the existing services and all routes within this 1970’s building. The project commenced with initial sketch design which detailed innovative energy saving options together with capital and payback analysis; all of which was accepted by TUS
