  • Transforming an abandoned historic building into a modern, functional accommodation facility

    About the project

Originally constructed in 1888 as a residential accommodation for officers, the building had since been abandoned and some areas had collapsed. The aim of this project was to restore Block H, transforming it into a modern and functional accommodation facility in line with current building regulations.

Over the course of the project, care was taken to ensure upgrades would be sympathetic to the original architectural elements which would be preserved and restored.

IN2 undertook an environmental analysis for the proposed residential refurbishment of Block H following BER methodology and Part L 2017 compliance. This analysis not only looked at how to make this building habitable for long term use, but also at how to align it with NZEB 2050 standards in line with Irish construction regulations.

Primary Energy usage of 122.5 kWh/m². ann was predicted for the proposed refurbishment with full compliance to the energy requirement of TGD Part L 2017. This included various applications such as lighting, fans, boilers etc. to comply with minimum energy efficiencies etc. as outlined in Part L 2017 Section 2.0.

After thorough dynamic simulation modelling, natural ventilation was deemed a viable ventilation strategy, subject to achieving adequate provision of free areas through opening windows, thereby cutting energy usage for cooling.

IN2's M&E expertise has ensured that a section of this historical institution breathes a second life in the shape of top-tier accommodation in Dublin.
