  • This project involved the design of a 1,030m2 new-built Mortuary and Post Mortem Facility on the University Hospital Waterford campus, providing a region-wide service.

    About the Project

The new building was designed to replace the existing mortuary, which was unable to facilitate the requirements of a regional service due to the dramatic increase in post-mortem examinations over the previous 20-year period.

Design of the new Mortuary and Post Mortem building was developed to support both the clinical and ceremonial operations delivered in parallel within a single building. This includes a multi-faith prayer curved room, with a canopied external receiving area for visitors, a walled courtyard, and several sensitively designed viewing rooms, providing comforting and respectful atmospheres suitable for the various end-of-life processes, developed in line with HSE & Irish Hospice Foundation ‘Design & Dignity’ Guidelines. From a clinical perspective, the facility comprises an integrated post-mortem room, as well as a separate specialist forensic post-mortem room, and a raised viewing room for forensic & education purposes.

IN2 provided Mechanical, Electrical, and Environmental engineering design services for this project which was successfully delivered in 2022.
