Strategic coordination ensured the safe integration of a data centre into a live hospital environment

About the project

IN2 was appointed to deliver the design and coordination of the relocation of St James's Hospital's central data centre as part of the wider campus redevelopment programme supporting the new National Paediatric Hospital. The project required the seamless integration of critical digital infrastructure within a live hospital environment, ensuring uninterrupted operation of essential clinical and administrative systems throughout the transition.

The new facility was designed with a resilient N+1 electrical architecture, incorporating redundant power supplies, advanced cooling solutions, and integrated building management controls to eliminate single points of failure. Following a comprehensive feasibility study and whole-life carbon and energy analysis, IN2 developed an efficient cooling strategy combining free cooling and CRAC technology. The result is a highly reliable, future-ready data centre that supports the hospital's long-term operational resilience while delivering improved energy performance.

Key highlights
