What is WiredScore?
WiredScore is a global certification for digital connectivity and technology infrastructure in eligible buildings. It operates in Ireland and is active in Dublin’s commercial market, where owners and occupiers increasingly need clear evidence of connectivity provision, resilience and future capacity.
WiredScore awards the certification. IN2 can support the project team with technical advice, information review, coordination and evidence preparation. WiredScore determines the certification outcome.
WiredScore applies to offices, industrial assets and homes, including multi-family residential, student living, build-to-sell and co-living schemes. Eligible portfolios and neighbourhoods may follow separate routes. Confirm the route, current scorecard and requirements with WiredScore for the asset and location.
When is WiredScore needed?
Start the review early, before the project fixes riser layouts, comms rooms, containment, pathways, power and access arrangements. Early coordination gives architecture, MEP, ICT, security and telecoms teams time to resolve constraints together.
Development scorecards apply to buildings under construction before practical completion and to full redevelopments. Occupied scorecards apply to buildings already in use. For an occupied building, the review must address installed systems, available evidence and relevant site conditions.
In Ireland, project teams may need to coordinate the certification brief with planning and statutory requirements under the Planning and Development Act 2000, as amended, the relevant planning authority or An Bord Pleanála process, and Irish Building Regulations. The connection between these items is project-specific: a certification review does not replace planning, building-control or specialist compliance advice.
NZEB objectives and the wider Irish energy regulatory context can provide useful project background, particularly where digital systems support monitoring and operations. They are not the focus of WiredScore, which addresses digital connectivity and technology infrastructure.
What does WiredScore assess?
Detailed credits and evidence requirements come from the current WiredScore scorecard. The assessment can address these seven practical areas:
- Internet service provision: ability to support high-speed services and provider access.
- Mobile performance: provision for in-building coverage and supporting infrastructure.
- Digital services: occupier or resident-facing services, such as public Wi-Fi, where relevant.
- Infrastructure setup: routes, spaces, capacity and maintainability for technology infrastructure.
- Technology resilience: measures that support continuity through physical, operational and cyber-related disruption.
- Future readiness: capacity to accommodate changing technology and occupier requirements.
- Sustainability technology: technology that supports resource monitoring, management or a more sustainable occupier experience, where relevant.
ComReg regulates Ireland’s electronic communications sector. Provider strategy should account for local network availability, building location and commercial arrangements, and can involve Irish and wider EU carriers. The design should provide suitable access and infrastructure for the intended service options.
Certification levels
WiredScore certification levels are Certified, Silver, Gold and Platinum. Platinum is the highest level. Under Certification is a project status during the scheme process, not a final certification level.
WiredScore assesses the building against the applicable scorecard and evidence. IN2 can help the team test options and close gaps, but no level should be described as achieved until WiredScore confirms it.
WiredScore is separate from SmartScore. WiredScore focuses on connectivity and technology infrastructure. SmartScore considers smart-building technology, including access, operational excellence, systems integration, data management, cybersecurity, safety and security, wellbeing, and sustainability technology. The products have different eligible asset types and assessment criteria.
How IN2 helps
IN2 coordinates the certification objective with the technical design and programme.
- Establish the brief: define the asset type, stage, intended route, rating ambition and assessment milestones.
- Review the infrastructure strategy: assess drawings, specifications and proposals for connectivity, telecoms, IT and related building systems.
- Identify gaps: record design issues, evidence gaps and interfaces, then prioritise the actions.
- Coordinate technical inputs: work with the client, design team, providers, specialists and contractor to assign evidence and delivery actions.
- Support the submission process: prepare technical responses and review updated information as the project develops, within the agreed appointment scope.
What you receive
The agreed deliverables can include:
- a WiredScore certification strategy and responsibilities matrix;
- a review of available information against the applicable certification brief;
- an infrastructure gap analysis with prioritised recommendations;
- coordination comments for drawings, specifications and actions;
- an evidence schedule with document owners and outstanding items;
- support with technical responses and submission material; and
- a record of assumptions, exclusions and decisions requiring client or specialist input.
